Q: What kind of therapy is massage?

A: Massage is one of the many traditional natural healing arts. The art of massage has been around as long as people have. Every culture has utilized some form of touch to promote health and healing.

Currently, western massage is the popular form of massage used in the United States. It is used by physical therapists, nurses, massage therapists, and alternative health providers.

Q: What can a massage do for me?

A: Massage has benefits for everyone. There are many different forms of massage and each serves a different purpose. Aside from the simple relaxation resulting from a massage, there are many other benefits from receiving a massage.

  • Massage supports overall health and wellness, and assists the body in the natural healing process.
  • Massage can enhance the circulation of fluids, digestion, and elimination.
  • Deep tissue massage aids in the removal of waste from the muscles, which aids in breaking up and eliminating scar tissue.

Q: What are the different types of massage?

A: Here is a brief sample of the different forms of massage and the benefits derived from each:

  • Lymphatic massage - balances the nervous system, activates inhibitory reflex cells which decrease or eliminate pain sensations, increases lymph flow for a decongestant effect on connective tissue, and it boosts immune response by increasing lymph flow an stimulating antibodies.
  • Rolfing - realigns the body
  • Swedish massage - stimulates, cleanses, and relaxes. Prevents soreness, relieves swelling and tension and improves muscular performance.
  • Reflexology - opens blocked energy pathways
  • Acupressure- relieves pain, opens blocked pathways
